2023 Business Methods Customer Partnership Meeting by the USPTO
On September 13, 2023, a meeting regarding patent examination practice (2023 Business Methods Customer Partnership Meeting) hosted by the USPTO was held. The conference attracted more than 300 legal practitioners who are engaged in patent and 250 US patent examiners to attend, and focused on topics such as business methods patents , inclusive innovation, patenting blockchain technology, and examination process, etc.
ZY’s Partner, Huang Xiaolin(Richard) was invited to participate in the conference and shared his presentation on Business methods patents in the US and China: Comparisons and strategies together with Elizabeth, a partner from Appleton Luff. The content thereof received positive feedback and evaluation from the USPTO examiners, patent attorneys and other attendees.
This was the first time of ZY’s attorneys, and maybe one of the rare occasions, that Chinese attorneys directly participated in an official meeting of a foreign patent office and had direct communication with the examiners of the foreign patent office and foreign patent attorneys. It enabled the relevant legal practitioners in China and the U.S. to have a better understanding of each other's business method patent examiantion standards and developments, and provided useful and practical advice to patent applicants and attorneys from both China and the U.S.
Business Methods Customer Partnership Meeting is an event organized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as part of the Patent Customer Partnership Meetings (CPM) series. At this series of meetings, the USPTO shares plans and working experiences to better inform and advance the industry participants. It also serves as a forum for patent practitioners to share ideas, experiences, and insights, and provides a good bridge for practitioners from different countries to communicate with each other.
